Saskatoon Health Region is successfully managing to maintain the supply levels of injectable drugs during an ongoing supply disruption.

In early March, Sandoz Canada, a major injectable drug supplier for North America, significantly reduced or ended production of several drugs, many of them sole source.

In order to conserve injectable drug supplies, nurses and physicians were asked to immediately change to oral equivalent medication wherever possible. The response was positive and efforts of nurses and physicians have reduced injectable drug usage for the drugs most affected by an average of 37 per cent since the disruption began.

To our knowledge, patient care has not been compromised during these efforts. Unfortunately, the supply disruption is likely to continue for some time and Pharmacy continues to ask for conservation whenever possible.

Pharmacy staff appreciates the patience and cooperation of all staff during this time.
