A smiling face on a spotless, transparent plaque greets visitors to the Positive Living Program office on the 2nd floor of Royal University Hospital. The face is Kathy Gerwing’s, a former Hepatitis Nurse Clinician within the program who recently passed away. The plaque, honouring her memory and expertise, was initiated by her coworkers who wanted her commitment to their program to be remembered.

Kathy Gerwing’s influence on the hepatitis C nursing program within Saskatoon Health Region and the province is significant. She was an innovator, initiating the role of Hepatitis Nurse Clinician over a decade ago and educating health care professionals across the province and country. But she was also very much on the front line, working with clients and physicians to help others live healthier lives.

“Kathy really made a difference in the lives of her clients and coworkers,” says Heather Miazga, Manager of the Positive Living Program. “I was fortunate enough to work with Kathy for little over a year and one of the reasons I felt comfortable in my role was her mentorship.”
