Shawna Ryan is an occupational therapist that has her sights set on competing on the Paralympics in 2016. It wouldn’t be the first time for this dedicated professional, but it would be in a different sport.

A visually impaired athlete, Shawna’s first Paralympic experience was as a member of the Canadian Women’s Goalball team competing at the 2008 games in Beijing China. The team didn’t make it to the medal round but it was this experience and her athletic ability that caught the attention of Cycling Canada in March of 2013. Shawna was identified as having “competitive potential” at a talent ID camp in Saskatoon and was soon training five days a week on a tandem bicycle with her pilot/partner, Audrey Lemieux.

This past June Shawna and Audrey placed 2nd in both time trial and road race at the Canadian Para-Cycling Road Championships, earning a spot to represent Canada in July at the Para World Cup in Spain. In Spain they placed 6th in time trials and 8th in the road race. The team will continue to represent Canada in their next competition, the Para-cycling World Championships in Greenville, South Carolina.

We wish Shawna all the best and continued success in her goal of reaching the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games.
