A very special cheesecake competition was held in one of Saskatoon City Hospital’s employee lounges on March 17, in honour of a late co-worker.

Cheesecakes line a table

Cheesecakes galore overtook the Operating Room employee lounge at Saskatoon City Hospital last week, as a competition was held in memory of a former employee.

Trish Carlson, an OR nurse, was responsible for a large number of food competitions and fundraisers over her years at City Hospital. She held chili cook-offs, bake sales, silent auctions – you name it – all to raise funds for breast cancer research. She even received a Bravo Award for her philanthropy. Unfortunately, she died on January 29, 2015, just two years into her retirement. Her birthday was March 17.

“She was an excellent baker and our cheesecake lady, so we thought it was fitting to have this in honour of her on her birthday,” explained Terri Nixey, manager of the Operating Room at Saskatoon City Hospital.

The contest was held in memory of Trish Carlson, a former OR nurse, who died this year.

This first-ever cheesecake competition, which was rolled into a special St. Patrick’s Day lunch, was a serious one, and had entries from nine different teams representing different OR services.

To vote in the competition, people were asked to make a donation, then cast a ballot. The Ophthalmology team won by just two votes, the Gynecology team came in second and the Anesthesia group came in third.

The event raised over $1,370 for breast cancer research, which was donated to Bust A Move for Breast Health Saskatoon.

The winning team not only received bragging rights, but a trophy and their name on a plaque in the employee lounge.

Special thanks goes out to Nicole Ladouceur for organizing the event, and Cheryl Wassermann for organizing the raffle prizes and draws. The prizes were donated from places Trish had worked: Horizon Laser Vision Center, Conlon Eye Institute, Prairieview Surgical Center, FYI Optometry, and by Kim Nesteroff, a co-worker and friend.
