The University Bridge officially reopened to traffic early on August 4, four weeks ahead of its intended opening date.

University Bridge in Saskatoon has reopened to traffic.

Traffic on the bridge had been restricted to authorized vehicles, including transit buses, ambulances and the Saskatoon Health Region shuttle since the rehabilitation project began May 3. The City had anticipated the bridge would not reopen to the public until late August.

The City of Saskatoon credits the near perfect weather for construction this summer, and the lack of major issues along the way for the accelerated opening date.

Some things still need to be done to the bridge, the City reports – such as concrete sealing and permanent lane markings, but the bridge will remain open for that work, with lane restrictions during off-peak hours. Some work will also continue under the bridge.

Another full bridge closure for rehabilitation is not expected for about another 25 years.
