The Avenue R entrance to C Wing at St. Paul’s Hospital is once again open.

The entrance was closed in June of 2014 after an engineering report indicated the old stairs were failing due to water infiltration and freeze-thaw cycles deteriorating the concrete.

It took several months to build but the new Avenue R entrance maintains the architecture of the former Nurse’s Residence wing of St. Paul’s Hospital.

The entrance, used by both staff and visitors, has been missed since its closure and plans were immediately drafted to rebuild it with the goal to create something that respected the heritage appearance of the building but balanced capital and annual maintenance costs.

In the summer of 2015, the rebuild began. It took several months of work by contractor Stuart Olson but the Avenue R entrance finally reopened in mid-November.

Although similar to the previous entrance, the new design is much more open on both the landing and stair to increase visibility and minimize security concerns. Vehicle access has been maintained as a one-way drive, but several parking/loading stalls from the old design were removed.
