Things might have been frosty and covered with several inches of fresh snow, but there was a warm Christmas spirit inside the Wynyard Civic Centre on December 10, while the sixth annual Festival of Wreaths auction was going on.

An annual fundraiser by the Wynyard Hospital Auxiliary, the funds raised by the Festival go towards purchasing equipment for the local hospital. Over the course of five previous festivals, the community of Wynyard and the surrounding area had come together to raise nearly $70,000.

After the December 9 auction, another $13,000 can be added to that total – $9,000 raised from the items auctioned off, with a $4,000 donation from Scotiabank, the main sponsor, on top of that.

Though the total is down a little from other years – last year’s event raised about $16,000, the Auxiliary couldn’t be happier about how things turned out.

“The night of the auction is always a fun event for the community,” said Diane Dalman, chair of the Festival of Wreaths Committee for the Wynyard Hospital Auxiliary. “And this year was just awesome. People really enjoyed it.”

Bread and Christmas decorations

Baking and Christmas decor are donated to the Festival of Wreaths for auction as well.

Though it started out specializing in wreaths, the event quickly expanded to include everything from baking to gift bags to kids’ items. All kinds of wreaths, baking, and Christmas decor were donated to the Festival again this year, including some very unique pieces, such as one wreath made from PVC pipe.

Some items went for big bucks – one wreath alone brought in $1,500 – and others for a little. The organizers were happy with every cent raised.

“The community of Wynyard and the surrounding area has supported this event in every way, right from the very beginning,” said Dalman. “Businesses, groups and individuals have put their creative juices to work every single year, and have donated beautiful, one-of-a-kind wreaths, as well as other items. And every year, we have a large crowd at the auction, ready to bid on and buy everything.”

The Festival has become one more great holiday event in Wynyard to help get everyone into the spirit of Christmas.

This year, as for the past number of years, the Wynyard Scotiabank came on board to sponsor the Festival. On top of their financial contribution, their staff came out to help the Auxiliary members at the event.
