The Christmas spirit was alive and well at St. Mary’s Villa in Humboldt this holiday season.

Employees at the 85-resident long term care home have been working to rebuild their social club, and over the Christmas season, sold Candy Cane Grams as a way to raise some funds for the club and to spread some Christmas cheer.

Santa and an employee

Santa delivered candy canes with special messages from other staff members at St. Mary’s Villa before Christmas.

“It seemed to go over really well,” said Colleen Dufort, one of the staff members behind the initiative. “We sold over 200 candy canes to staff to give to other staff members or residents with a personal note attached, but no clues as to who the sender was.”

The Candy Cane Grams were delivered to the designated recipients by Santa just before Christmas.

“The smiles they brought to the faces of our residents and staff when they were delivered was the real Christmas gift,” Dufort said. “Some staff members were even brought to tears at being recognized by their peers for their dedication and hard work.”

The Candy Cane money will be used to start up the social club, and will allow for the club to purchase prizes and such for more fundraising projects.
