“The morning my brain aneurysm burst was like any other,” says Peggy Benko, a lawyer from Regina who in 2015 was rushed to Royal University Hospital for treatment of a burst aneurysm and stroke. “There was no warning. No symptoms. One minute I was in my office and my next memory is from a month later.”

“Peggy was fortunate that she received timely treatment,” says Dr. Michael Kelly, a neurosurgeon at Royal University Hospital. “Technology like what is available in our new angiography biplane surgical suite is what makes positive outcomes like Peggy’s possible.”

On October 6, one of the most advanced angiography biplane suites in North America was officially opened at Royal University Hospital. On the technical side, angiography biplane suites combine imaging with surgical techniques to improve patient outcomes for conditions such as stroke, aneurysm, internal bleeding and cancer. On the human side, it saves lives.

“Ten months after my aneurysm, just ten months after my angels (referring to her surgeons Dr. Lissa Peeling and Dr. Mike Kelly and health care team) worked so hard to save me, I walked my son down the aisle at his wedding,” says Peggy. “It was because of them, and the technology that supports them, that I am here today enjoying life to the fullest.”

The new suite is the second angiography biplane suite at Royal University Hospital. Its construction was made possible thanks to the Government of Saskatchewan, which provided $2.2 million to the project, and Royal University Hospital Foundation and its donors, who contributed over $1 million. The older suite will undergo renovations to ensure its technology matches the new suite as $1 million is being raised by the RUH Foundation through their GREATE.R. Campaign.
